10 years down the track Capacity Australia work still bringing elder abuse action to the banks

In February 2015, following a successful trial with major Australian banks, Capacity Australia  released a simple online education and assessment tool to up-skill frontline bank staff about potential red flags for financial abuse of older people and what to do if they identify abuse. The development and trial of this tool was supported by the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA), to combat the then-rising financial abuse of vulnerable people. Read the paper here. With increasing avenues for abuse via new technology and clever scammers, this work, education and advocacy for the vulnerable in our community is even more important. This article was published last week describing how an experienced bank worker used knowledge of red flags to identify a potential scam and saved an older customer from losing his life’s savings. This is the fruit of our labours.
